Troy High School wins another state Science Olympiad

Barbara Giasone of The Orange County Register reported that Troy High School of Fullerton, Orange County, wins its 12th California Science Oympiad since 1985.


FULLERTON — For the 12th year since 1985, Fullerton's Troy High School has won the state Science Olympiad.

The victory was announced Monday by coach Kurt Wahl.

The 22nd annual state contest was held Saturday at Tesoro High School in Rancho Santa Margarita.

The 17-member team scored 227 points, 88 more than University High School, which ranked second, according to unofficial results posted online.

Troy's winning team, also coached by Dan Jundanian, will compete May 17-20 at the University of Indiana in the national competition. Troy has won the national contest five times in 12 trips to the finals.

Also in the 26-school high school division, Orange County's Valencia placed seventh, Villa Park placed ninth, Woodbridge scored 15th, Tesoro placed 20th and Northwood ranked 22nd.

In the younger division, also 26 schools strong, El Rancho Charter Middle School ranked best out of the Orange County schools at fourth. Cerro Villa ranked fifth, Utt placed ninth, Ladera Vista scored 10th and Kramer placed 14th.

In the Olympiad, students compete in a series of written and practical tests of their chemistry, biology and engineering knowledge.
