David Yang and Kevin Zhang Winners of Southern California MATHCOUNTS

2009 Southern California State MATHCOUNTS was held at UCI on March 21, 2009.  David Yang, a 7th grade Home Schooler, won the Individual round for the second consecutive year.  Kevin Zhang, a 7th grader from Suzanne Middle School, won the COUNTDOWN round.  Carmel Valley Middle School of San Diego is the TEAM round winner.  David will represent the State of California to compete in the National MATHCOUNTS in May.

In the individual competition, the top 16 students are:

  9. Atritro Biswas, First Avenue Middle School
  10. Thomas Moon, Goleta Valley Middle School

11 - 16 in random order:

  • Cynthia Shi, Ridgecrest Middle School
  • Chiyoung Kim, Walter Reed Middle School
  • Dawit Kim, Walter Reed Middle School
  • Alex Kahng, Earl Warren Middle School

In the coundown round, the top four students are:

  1. Kevin Zhang, Suzanne Middle School
  2. Cynthia Shi, Ridgecrest Middle School
  3. Brandon Zeng, Carmel Valley Middle School
  4. Michelle Lin, Palos Verdes Middle School.

In the team competition, the top three teams are:

  1. Carmel Valley Middle School, San Diego Chapter
  2. Suzanne Middle School, San Bernadino Chapter
  3. Rancho San Joaquin Middle School, Orange County Chapter

Congratulations to all participanting students, parents, teachers and schools.  Special congratulations goes to David Yang, Brian Wagner, Kevin Zhang, Paolo Gentili and Larry Zhang for top-16 placement and to Ellen Lee, Brandon Kao, Hugo Yen, Tiffany Zhu, Michelle Lee, Jasmin Kung, John Shin, Hao Tian Xu, Christian Liu, Dennis Shin, Jessica Lin, Jin Woo Kim, Sayaka Nakano, Varun Raj, and Andrew Ma for advancing to State MATHCOUNTS.
