Avid Academy for Gifted Youth Students Receive Awards
Seattle, WA – October 23, 2007 – Irvine’s Avid Academy for Gifted Youth has some of the best 9th graders and middle-school mathematicians in the country, as demonstrated by their strong finish in the 2007 Fall Startup Event, a national mathematics contest administered by National Assessment & Testing (http://www.natassessment.com). Coach James Li prepared the students for the first major competition of the academic year, in which they worked furiously for thirty minutes, racing to answer one hundred problems in a variety of mathematical topics. With so many questions and so little time, competitors must not only have strong mathematical skills, but also be able to quickly decide which problems to solve and which to skip.
After results from students across the nation were processed, Johnny Li and Edward Dinh placed 3rd and 27th respectively in the 9th-grade division, while David Yang and Dai Yang placed 2nd and 12th respectively in the middle school division. National Assessment & Testing will administer five contests this year, including the 2007 Team Scramble on November 1st and the 2007 Ciphering Time Trials on December 13th.
National Assessment & Testing administers high-quality mathematics competitions that schools can participate in through the mail. Their contests cover a variety of formats, including individual and team tests, as well as a variety of difficulties, from an easier 100 problems in 30 minutes to a more complicated 15 problems in one week.
