Distinctions in the American Mathematics Competition 8.
The results are back from the American Mathematics Competition 8, and many Avid Academy students received awards for their high scores.
On November 18, over 147,000 students from across the nation competed in the American Mathematics Competition 8. This middle school math contest, now in its 24th year, aims to spur interest in math at a formative age, and to develop mathematical talents through friendly competition. This year, 13,065 students from 171 schools competed in California alone.
Seventy-eight Avid Students and ten guests participated in the 2008 AMC 8 exam held at the South Coast Chinese Culture Center on November 18. Seven Avid students participated in the competition at their own schools. The total number of participants reflected an increase of 44% over last year.
David Yang and Brian Wagner have the honor of being California State Winners. They recieved this distinction upon completing their tests with perfect scores.
There is a significant improvement in the performance of our students compared with 2007: The number of National Honors with Distanction winners increased by 180% from 5 to 14, the number of National Honor Rolls winners increased by 160% from 9 to 24, and the number of National Merit Rolls winners increased by 440% from 5 to 27.
