Jonathan Li won Senior Sweepstakes and Christian Liu won Mathematics and Computer Science Division at 2011 OCSEF
2011 Orange County Science and Engineering Fair concluded last Sunday. Senior Jonathan Li again won the Senior Sweepstakes and became the 2011 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair Finalist. His project is "Effects of Cell Compressibility, Motility, and Contact Inhibition on the Growth of Tumor Cell Clusters". Johnny conducted his research at UCI with Prof. John Lowenbrub.
Christian Liu, a tenth grader from Sage Hill School, placed first in the Mathematics and Computer Science Division. Her project is "Effect of Gap Penalty on Global Alignment Accuracy". Christian started her research last summer at Avid Academy by first taking a Java programming course and followed by a bioinformatics research camp where she learned to program gene alignments algorithms. Throughout the year, she continued with this project under the mentorship of Dr. Li.
Other current or former Avid students recognized at the fair include:
- James Xue - First Place in Applied Mechanics
- William Xue - Third Place in Fluids and aerodynamics
- Biyonka Liang - Third place in Electricity and Electronics
