2008 USAMO Qualifiers Announced

The American Mathematical Association announced its 2008 USAMO Qualifiers on Tuesday, April 8.  California students accounted for 1/5 of the total number of qualifiers with 91 out of 500 qualifiers.  19 of the students are from Southern California counties.  Orange County saw an 100% increase in its USAMO qualifiers over last year with 12 qualifiers.  University High School leads the list with 4 qualifiers, the first time in Southern California history, a single school produced more than 2 qualifiers according to Dr. Merryfield, the coach of Southern California ARML team.

The following Orange County students qualified for 2008 USAMO:

    • Seoungjun Lee, 11th Grade, Brea Olinda High School
    • Yuxi Tian, 11th Grade, Irvine High School
    • Andrew Lee, 11th Grade, Northwood High School
    • Zhifan Zhang, 11th Grade, University High School
    • Jonathan Elzur, 10th Grade, Tarbut V Torach School
    • Jim Tao, 10th Grade, Troy High School
    • Jay Whang, 10th Grade, Troy High School
    • George Xing, 10th Grade, University High School
    • Qiuyi Zhang, 10th Grade, University High School
    • Jiunn Song, 10th Grade, Woodbridge High School
    • Johnny Li, 9th Grade, St. Margaret's Episcopal School
    • David Yang, 6th Grade, South Pointe Middle School

Avid students David Yang, Johnny Li, Jonathan Elzur, and George Xing are among the qualifiers.
