What is it?
Teachers instruct students from kindergarten to high school in various fields of mathematics.
What do you need to do to get this job?
- Personal qualities: vigor, patience, passion for teaching
- Education: Teachers must have a B.A. preferably in education, but any major will suffice. Then teachers must complete an accreditation program that includes coursework as well as field experience. Accreditation programs can be completed through a university, an internship program, a government sponsored program, experience at a private school, or the Peace Corps.
- Professional associations: NEA (National Education Association), CTA (California Teachers Association), local teacher unions, NCTM (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics)
- Exams:
- CBEST: California Basic Educational Skills Test
- CSET: California Subject Examinations for Teachers
Where will you work?
Teachers are employed by schools of all levels. Most teachers work at public or private schools, but a few work with special needs students, with continuing education programs for adults, or for private clients.
