21st Century Learning Skills

Partnership for 21st Century Skills is an organization founded by U.S. Department of Education, National Education Association, and business leaders such as Time Warner, Apple Computer, Cisco Systems, Dell Computer, Microsoft and SAP in 2002. The organization's mission is to bring 21st Century Skills to every child in America by serving as a catalyst for change in teaching, learning, and assessment through a unique partnership among education, business, and government leaders. The organization believes every child in American needs 21st century knowledge and skills to succeed as effective citizens, workers and leaders in the 21st century. They identified Information and Communication, Thinking and Problem-Solving, and Interpersonal and Self-Directional Skills as the three most important learning skills in the 21st Century.

Study hints AP classes overrated

Advanced Placement courses typically are the toughest classes in high school, with the longest term papers, the thickest textbooks, and the highest stakes: Students who score high on the classes' nationally standardized exams can earn college credit, sometimes enough to save thousands of dollars in tuition costs. But a new study, presented yesterday at a national conference, is generating debate on the merits of Advanced Placement courses, at least in the sciences. The classes are touted as college-level work for high school students to give them an edge in the fierce competition for college, but the study by a Harvard senior lecturer in astronomy and a University of Virginia assistant professor found that students who scored high on the exams in biology, chemistry, and physics didn't earn much better grades than students who never took the advanced classes.

SAT Measures More Than Student Performance, Research Shows It Is also a Reliable Measure of IQ

Meredith C. Frey and Douglas K. Detterman, researchers at Case Western Reserve University, have shown that students' SAT test scores correlate as highly as, and sometimes higher than, IQ tests correlate with each other. This is strong evidence that the SAT is a de facto intelligence test. Their findings will be published in the June issue of Psychological Science, a journal of the American Psychological Society.

AMC 10/12 Exam Strategy

How many questions should you answer on AMC 10 and AMC 12 to get the best chances of qualifying for AIME? The optimal strategy is to answer 20 questions on AMC 10 (if you make two mistakes, you still qualify with a score of 120.5) and 16 questions on AMC 12 (if you make three mistakes, you still qualify with a score of 100.5).
