Summer Camps for Gifted Math and Science Students
The following is a list of recommended summer camps for gifted math and science students. If you have good experience at a camp not listed below, please email us at info@avidacademy.com so we can update the list. All grades are the entering academic year grades in September 2008.
Grades 4 - 6
- 2008 Orange County Math Olympiad Summer Camp (Irvine, CA): Intensive two-week problem solving training program for GATE students. Local half-day program.
- CTY - Center for Talented Youth (Los Angeles, CA; Pasadena, CA; Thousand Oaks, CA; and others): National gifted summer program in all subjects for qualified gifted students. National boarding programs with few local day problems.
- UCI Talent Students Academy (Irvine, CA): Academic appreciation one-week programs in all subjects for identified GATE students. Local half-day, full-day, and boarding programs.
Grades 7 - 8
- 2008 Orange County Math Olympiad Summer Camp (Irvine, CA): Intensive two-week problem solving training program for GATE students. Local half-day program.
- AwesomeMath Summer Camp (Dollas, TX): Elite three-week problem solving training with current and past USA Math Olympiad Team Directors. National boarding program for high school and top middle school students. Entrance exam required.
- EPGY Summer Institute for Middle Schools (Palo Alta, CA): Three- and four-week programs for gifted middle school students in all subjects.
- MathPath Summer Camp (Maine): Intensive four-week problem solving and high-level math appreciation program for state and national ranked math students. National boarding program. Entrance exam required.
- UCI Talent Students Academy: Academic appreciation one-week programs in all subjects for identified GATE students.
Grades 9 - 11

- COSMOS: California State Summer School for Mathematics and Science (UCI & UC San Diego). Residential programs for top high school students in math and science.
- EPGY Summer Institutes (Palo Alto, CA): Three- and four-week residential programs for gifted students on Stanford campus.
- PROMYS: Program in mathematics for young scientists (Boston, MA): PROMYS is a six-week summer program at Boston University designed to encourage motivated high school students to explore the creative world of mathematics in a supportive community of peers, counselors, research mathematicians, and visiting scientists.
- The Ross Program (OH): The Ross Program at the Ohio State University is an intensive summer experience designed to encourage motivated pre-college students to explore mathematics. During those eight weeks, students are immersed in a world of mathematical discovery.
- Stanford University Mathematics Summer Camp (Palo Alto, CA): Four-week intensive math study.
- USA/Canada MathCamp (Waterville, Maine): Elite four-week problem solving and college math programs. National boarding program. Entrance exam.
Grade 12
- Woman's Technology Program at MIT (Boston, MA): The MIT Women's Technology Program (WTP) is a four-week summer academic and residential experience where female high school students explore engineering through hands-on classes, labs, and team-based projects in the summer after 11th grade .
- RSI - The Research Science Institute (Boston, MA): Each summer approximately 75 high school students gather for six of the most stimulating weeks of their young lives. Selected from the United States and other nations, these students participate in a rigorous academic program which emphasizes advanced theory and research in mathematics, the sciences, and engineering. Students attend college-level classes taught by distinguished professors. Nationally recognized teachers conduct classes designed to sharpen research skills. In addition, students complete hands-on research with top mentors at corporations, universities, and research organizations.

2006 Federal Budget: $9,596,000. However, "Due to FY 2006 budget constraints, a new discretionary grant competition will not be held this year for the Jacob K. Javits Gifted and Talented Students Education Program. Future grant competitions are contingent upon available funding.
