California Math League (CAML)

California Math League's Statement of Purpose

The primary focus of the Math League is building student interest and confidence in mathematics through solving worthwhile problems.

4th and 5th Grade Contests

Advantages:

  • Encourages enthusiasm for math in and outside of the classroom
  • Familiarizes students with competitive mathematics: this may be their first math contest
  • Challenge students to apply their understanding of math to a flexible approach to problem sovling
  • High scoring students receive certificates of merit that congratulate their achievements

Topics Covered By the Exam: properties of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, time and calendar questions, shapes, perimeter, money, basic ratio and percent, rounding numbers, remainders, integers, and more.

Contest Format: Each contest consists of 30 multiple-choice questions that you can do in 30 minutes. On each 3-page contest, the questions on the 1st page are generally straightforward, those on the 2nd page are moderate in difficulty, and those on the 3rd page are more difficult.

Contest Rules and Awards: Awards are presented at state and regional levels.  Region #7 consists of schools from Orange and San Diego County.  A team consists of a minimum of six students.

6th, 7th and 8th Grade Contests

Advantages:

  • Offers more challenging competitions for even further enthusiasm for mathematics
  • Requires an even deeper level of understanding of math concepts that encourages students to sharpen their problem solving skills
  • Promotes creative thinking with problems that allow more than one method of solving
  • Creates connectivity between knowledge of mathematics and its practical applications

Topics Covered By the Exam: basic topics, plus exponents, fractions, reciprocals, decimals, rates, ratios, percents, angle measurement, perimeter, area, circumference, basic roots, patterns, sequences, integers, triangles and right triangles, and other topics, depending on the grade level. 

Contest Format: Each contest consists of 40 multiple-choice questions that you can do in 30 minutes. On each 3-page contest, the questions on the 1st page are generally straightforward, those on the 2nd page are moderate in difficulty, and those on the 3rd page are more difficult.

Contest Rules and Awards: Awards are presented at state and regional levels.  Region #7 consists of schools from Orange and San Diego County. A team consists of a minimum of six students.

High School Contests

Advantages:

  • CAML High School Contests are the best in high school mathematics competition
  • Is excellent practice for SATs
  • Further encourages students to engage themselves with the study of mathematics

Topics Covered By the Exam: geometry, algebra, trigonometry, logarithms, series, sequences, exponents, roots, integers, real numbers, combinations, probability, coordinate geometry, and more.

Contest Format: There are 6 High School Contests each year, with 6 questions per contest. There is a 30 minute time limit for each contest. On each contest, the last two questions are generally more difficult than the first four. 

Contest Rules and Awards: Awards are presented at state and regional levels.  Region #7 consists of schools from Orange and San Diego County. A team consists of a minimum of six students. There are 6 score reports per year for each league, showing each participating school's team scores, high scoring schools and students, and students with a perfect score. Each score report is accompanied by a newsletter, which includes comments and alternate solutions from teachers and students.

Algebra Course 1 Contests

Advantages:

  • Offers a unique approach to motivating students learning algebra for the first time
  • Includes word problems, requiring students to apply algebra concepts on physical models
  • Stresses the value of applied algebraic technique
  • Rewards top scorers with certificates of merit

Topics Covered By the Exam: basic algebra skills, to more difficult problems, requiring creative solutions by applying algebra course 1 techniques.
