The Math League is dedicated to bringing challenging mathematics materials to students. The Math League specializes in math contests, books, and computer software designed to stimulate interest and confidence in mathematics for students from the 4th grade through high school. Over 1 million students participate in Math League contests each year. Contest problems are designed to cover a range of mathematical knowledge for each grade level. All of the problems on each contest require no additional knowledge of mathematics beyond the grade level they test.
Top students and teams are recognized at both state and regional levels. All team members must from the same school. The minimum number of students per team is five and the maximum number of students per team is 30. The team score is the sum of top five students.
4th and 5th Grade Contests
Math League's 4th and 5th grade contests can add interest and excitement to any mathematics program. These are some of the first math contests many students will compete in--and the most fun with math they've ever had! All of the questions cover basic 4th and 5th grade topics, including: properties of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, time and calendar questions, shapes, perimeter, money, basic ratio and percent, rounding numbers, remainders, integers, and more. These contests challenge students to show their understanding of basic principles through numerical and word problems that encourage an open, flexible approach to problem solving. These contests are provided for intraschool competition, and come with certificates of merit for your school's high scoring students.
Contest Format: Each contest consists of 30 multiple-choice questions that you can do in 30 minutes. On each 3-page contest, the questions on the 1st page are generally straightforward, those on the 2nd page are moderate in difficulty, and those on the 3rd page are more difficult. The 4th and 5th grade contests are for use in your own school or district. Since results are not used for interschool comparisons, we do not enclose a score report form.
Contest Rules and Awards: Awards are presented at state and regional levels. Region #7 consists of schools from Orange and San Diego County. For results to be official, participants have to form teams based on their regular schools. A team consists of a minimum of six students based on the following rules:
- If there are at least 6 students from a single grade of the same school, the students will form the school team and their results willl be ranked against other teams in Region #7 and in California. The name of the team will be the name of your school. There will be only one team per grade from each school.
- If the number of students from the same school are unable to form a grade-based team, they may form a mixed grade team if there are at least six students from the same school. The team will take the test based on the students of the highest grade. For example, if the team has 4 six graders, 1 seventh grader, and 1 eighth grader, the team will be counted as the 8th grade team and all team members have to take the 8th grade exam.
- If there are less than six students from a school, all results will be unofficial (not considered for rewards).
Contest Books: Math League Press offers past contest books to help students prepare for the California Math League contents. The following contest books are available at the Avid Academy Bookstore. The money raised in selling these contest books will be used to subsidize future Orange County Math Circle events.
