The Math League is dedicated to bringing challenging mathematics materials to students. The Math League specializes in math contests, books, and computer software designed to stimulate interest and confidence in mathematics for students from the 4th grade through high school. Over 1 million students participate in Math League contests each year. Contest problems are designed to cover a range of mathematical knowledge for each grade level. All of the problems on each contest require no additional knowledge of mathematics beyond the grade level they test.

Top students and teams are recognized at both state and regional levels.  All team members must from the same school.  The minimum number of students per team is five and the maximum number of students per team is 30.  The team score is the sum of top five students.

Algebra I Contests

Math League's Algebra Course 1 Contests are a great way to motivate students learning algebra for the first time. The questions range from basic algebra skills, to more difficult problems, requiring creative solutions by applying algebra course 1 techniques. A wide variety of word problems are included on each contest, in addition to computational problems, to stress the value of applied algebra techniques. These contests are provided for intraschool competition, and come with certificates of merit for your school's high scoring students, and one of our High School Contest problem books for your school's top scorer. Here's a quote from one of last year's Algebra Course 1 students who participated in our contest: "I hope you keep making those tests. It really gets your brain to work".

Contest Format: Each contest consists of 30 multiple-choice questions that you can do in 30 minutes. On each 3-page contest, the questions on the 1st page are generally straightforward, those on the 2nd page are moderate in difficulty, and those on the 3rd page are more difficult. The questions require no more knowledge than that of a first year high school algebra course.

Contest Rules and Awards: Awards are presented at state and regional levels.  Region #7 consists of schools from Orange and San Diego County.  For results to be official, participants have to form teams based on their regular schools.  A team consists of a minimum of six students based on the following rules:

  • If there are at least 6 students from a single grade of the same school, the students will form the school team and their results willl be ranked against other teams in Region #7 and in California.  The name of the team will be the name of your school.  There will be only one team per grade from each school.
  • If the number of students from the same school are unable to form a grade-based team, they may form a mixed grade team if there are at least six students from the same school.  The team will take the test based on the students of the highest grade.  For example, if the team has 4 six graders, 1 seventh grader, and 1 eighth grader, the team will be counted as the 8th grade team and all team members have to take the 8th grade exam.
  • If there are less than six students from a school, all results will be unofficial (not considered for rewards).

Contest Books: Math League Press offers past contest books to help students prepare for the California Math League contents.  The following contest books are available at the Avid Academy Bookstore.  The money raised in selling these contest books will be used to subsidize future Orange County Math Circle events.
