Math Olympiad for Middle Schools
The Math Olympiad Track prepares students for major math competitions at middle school and high school levels. Depends on students’ personal interests and priorities, they can find meaningful and challenging programs to meet their needs. We provide training and opportunities, and mentorship for our students to compete in major middle school math competitions such as MATHCOUNTS, AMC 8, and MOEMS.
Overview
Avid Academy will offer the following math competitions to middle school students during the 2006 - 2007 school year:
- MOEMS Division M - Math Olympiads for Elementary and Middle School Division M
- AMC 8
- AMC 10, AMC 12, and AIME (High school competitions available to top middle school students)
- MATHCOUNTS
- California Math League
- Orange County Math League
- Orange County Math Olympiad
All Avid students are eligible to participate if a contest is not available at their school.
E210 - Introductory Math Competitions
In this introductory course, we will teach a four-step problem solving method developed by Dr. George Polya in the context of 10 commonly used problem solving strategies:
- Drawing a picture or diagram
- Making an organized list
- Making a table
- Solving a simpler related problem
- Finding a pattern
- Guessing and checking
- Experimenting
- Acting out the problem
- Working backwards
- Writing an equation
Problems selected from past MOEMS (Math Olympiad for Elementary and Middle Schools) competitions will be used to illustrate the concepts and teach the techniques. The students will also participate in five rounds of MOEMS Division M competition.
| Prerequisite: | Students in GATE programs |
| Grades: | 6th - 8th Grade Honor students |
| Total Time: | 30 Hours |
| Next Course: | E220 - Intermediate Math Competitions |
| Availability: | 2007 Math Olympiad Summer Camp |
E220 - Intermediate Math Competitions
This class continues the development of problem solving skills, but focus more on problem solving speed and accuracy. The students will be challenged to solve difficult problems in several different settings:
- Countdown – solve problems mentally.
- Sprint – solve problems in less than 1 minute each without using a calculator.
- Target – solve complex problems in 3 minutes each using a calculator.
- Team – solve difficult problems with a team of four students.
Problems selected from past MATHCOUNTS competitions will be used to illustrate the concepts and teach the techniques. The students will participate in MOEMS Division M as well as AMC 8 and MATHCOUNTS contests.

| Grades: | 6th - 8th Grade Honor students |
| Total Time: | 45 Hours (30 meetings at 1.5 hour per meeting) |
| Next Course: | E230 - Advanced Math Competitions |
| Availability: | Customized coaching with private, semi-private, and quartet settings |
E230 - Advanced Math Competitions
This class is a bridge between middle school and high school math competitions. Top students will compete for regional and national awards on middle school math competitions while participate in high school contests such as AMC 10 and AMC 12.

E310 - MOEMS Division M
This course is designed for students who missed the regular enrollment, but would like to get started on the MOEMS Division M competition. We will review MOEMS related problem solving skills and work on problems selected from past MOEMS Division M contests. At the end of the course, the student will be placed into a regular training program.
The MOEMS Division M is a five-round, 25-minutes, 5-question contests designed by Mathematics Olympiads for Elementary and Middle Schools. It focuses on problem solving skills suitable for gifted middle school math students. Any student in grade 8 or below (age 14 or younger) is eligible to take MOEMS Division M.
