2011 Jump Start Pre-Algebra and Math Competitions (Grades 5 - 7)

Registration

To register, click on 2011 Jump Start Pre-Algebra and Math Competitions Summer Camp Online Registration or download the 2011 Math Olympiad Summer Camp Registration Form.  Registration deadline is June 15, 2011 on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Who

This camp is designed for students who will be studying pre-algebra or equivelent in the coming school year.  Advanced 5th graders are also accepted into the program upon passing a qualifying exam.  The camp is also ideal for students who are new to middle school math competitions and would like to prepare for the AMC 8 exam in November.

Our camp is limited to 25 students per session.  To receive personalized attention, you will be placed into small groups according to problem solving experience.  If you are bright and talented, eager to explore advanced math topics, and motivated to solve challenging problems, come join other gifted students to make this summer enjoyable and meaningful.

What

Curriculum

The purpose of this camp is to develop pre-algebra concepts and skills.  You will learn how to use the following problem solving strategies:

  • Look for patterns
  • Simplify a problem
  • Use mathematical properties
  • Guess and check
  • Identify different cases
  • Consinder a simpler case
  • Make a picture model
  • Draw a diagram
  • Work backwards

You will also learn important pre-algebra topics such as

  • Arithmetic sequences
  • Sum of patterns
  • Exponents
  • Prime factorization
  • Modular arithmetics
  • Unit fractions
  • Counting
  • Proportional reasoning
  • Solving algebra equations

Fun Activities

You will also learn math games and participate in fun math activities such as:

  • 24!
  • Rubik's cube
  • Constructing tetrahedrons
  • KenKen tournament
  • Sudoku tournament
  • Math Magic!

Math Competitions

In addition, you will experience mock math competitions such as

  • California Math League
  • Math Olympiad
  • Online Math League
  • AMC 8
  • MATHCOUNTS

You will be able to participate in these math competitions during next school year if you continue your study at Avid Academy.

Homework

Students will be giving homework assignments every day to be completed before the next day of Camp.  They will submit their homework for grading, and perfect or near-perfect scores will earn students an Avid Dollar.  On the last day of Camp, students can exchange their Avid Dollars for prizes!

The camp will be held at room GH126, Concordia University.  The parking is FREE.  Ask the university guard to request a parking pass and directions to the classroom.
