Registration

To register, click on 2010 Jump Start Algebra and AMC 8 Online Registration or download the 2010 Math Olympiad Summer Camp Registration Form.  Registration deadline is June 15, 2010 on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Who

This camp is designed for students who will take Algebra I in middle school in the coming school year.  To qualify, a student must have an A in an equivalent Pre-Algebra class in the current school year or pass a qualifying exam at Avid Academy.  The camp is also designed to give students an early experience in middle school math competitions as our curriculum covers the most popular AMC 8 and MATHCOUNTS topics in number theory, counting, probability, algebra, and geometry.

Our camp is limited to 25 students per session.  To receive personalized attention, you will be placed into small groups according to problem solving experience.  If you are bright and talented, eager to explore advanced math topics, and motivated to solve challenging problems, come join other gifted students to make this summer enjoyable and meaningful.

What

Curriculum

In this middle school problem solving camp, we teach advanced topics in probability, number theory, algebra and geometry.  You will improve accuracy and speed to solve problems in four different settings:

  • Countdown – solve problems mentally.
  • Sprint – solve problems in less than 1 minute each without using a calculator.
  • Target – solve complex problems in 3 minutes each using a calculator.
  • Team – solve difficult problems with a team of four students.

You will learn algebra skills in

  • Basic number properties
  • Algebriac expressions
  • One variable linear equations
  • Rate and ratio
  • Inequalities
  • Exponents
  • Algebraic manipulations
  • Speed, mixture, percent, and work word problems
  • Quadratic equations

We will also focus on middle school problem solving strategies such as:

  • Educated guess and check
  • Build a model
  • Make a systematic list
  • Use diagrams and graphs
  • Simplifying the problem
  • Restate a problem from a different perspective
  • Use analogies
  • Look for patterns
  • Make connections

Mock Competitions
