2011 Junior Math Olympiad Summer Camp (Grades 4 - 5)

Who
This camp is designed for students who are interested in math but not challenged by their school curriculum. To qualify, you must be a 4th or 5th grade GATE student and have an A in your current math class. If your school does not have a GATE program, you must take a qualifying exam at Avid Academy.
Our camp is limited to 25 students per session. To receive personalized attention, you will be placed into small groups according to problem solving experience. If you are bright and talented, eager to explore advanced math topics, and motivated to solve challenging problems, come join other gifted students to make this summer enjoyable and meaningful.
What
Curriculum
In this introductory problem solving camp, our focus is to teach you good problem solving habits to minimize careless mistakes and improve problem solving speed. You will learn how to use the following problem-solving strategies in solving interest math problems:
- Look for patterns
- Guess and check
- Simplify the problem
- Draw a diagram
- Use picture models
- Work backwards
- Make a list or table
- Compare before-and-after
Fun Activities
You will also learn math games and participate in fun math activities such as:
- 24!
- Rubik's cube
- Constructing tetrahedrons
- KenKen
- Math Magic!
Math Competitions
In addition, you will experience mock math competitions such as
- California Math League
- Math Olympiad
- Online Math League
You will be able to participate in these math competitions during next school year if you continue your study at Avid Academy.
Homework
Students will be giving homework assignments every day to be completed before the next day of Camp. They will submit their homework for grading, and perfect or near-perfect scores will earn students an Avid Dollar. On the last day of Camp, students can exchange their Avid Dollars for prizes!

Where
The camp will be held at room GH126, Concordia University. The parking is FREE. Ask the university guard to request a parking pass and directions to the classroom.
