2008 California MATHCOUNTS Held
2008 California MATHCOUNTS was held at UCI for Southern California and UC Davis for Northern California students on March 15, 2008. For the second straight year, a sixth grader won the Southern California MATHCOUNTS. David Yang of South Point Middle School won the Individual Overall Competition, Andrew Zhang of Ridgecrest Intermediate School won the Countdown Competition, and Rancho San Joaquin Middle School of Irvine won the Team Competition. Three Avid students, David Yang, Dai Yang, and Jiao Lan, finished in the top sixteen.
In California, the Countdown Round is an unofficial event. The top four students in the Individual Overall Competition advance to the National Competition. This year, all top four students are from Northern California.
Three Orange County students placed in the top 16:
- 2nd Place: Dillan Zhi, South Lake Middle School, Irvine
- 9th Place: Dai Yang, Ranch San Joaquin Middle School, Irvine
- 14th Place: Jiao Lan, Niguel Hill Middle School, Laguna Niguel
The top three teams are:
- 1st Team - Rancho San Joaquin Middle School (Anthony Chen, Ryo Sasaki, Simon Wu, Dai Yang, Coach: Mrs. Embree)
- 2nd Team - Del Mar Heights Elementary School
- 3rd Team - Ridgecrest Intermediate School
